A glance at the Mexicos battle for Independence. This is a paper on the Mexican Independence. It examines the three stages, starting, center, and end of the Mexican Independence. The creator discusses the dad of the Mexican Independence Father Hidalgo. 'Miguel Hidalgo began the Mexican Independence on September 16,1810. How did Mexico get the chance to be a different nation from the various nations, particularly Spain? Father Hidalgo was a minister in the town of Dolores. He had been contemplating how life would be for everybody if the Spanish or some other nation didn't lead Mexico. Father Hidalgo and his little gathering, for the most part of criollos, in Queretaro had gotten together to design a defiance for their autonomy. One of the criollos from the gathering had double-crossed Hidalgo and the gathering as he informed the Spanish government regarding their arrangements for the defiance. The gathering discovered that one of the criollos had sold out them in light of the fact that the spouse of the criollo told the gathering before the Spanish government had whenever to catch and slaughter them. Opening a Credit Card for Points Is it Worth it
Opening a Credit Card for Points Is it Worth it Opening a Credit Card for Points: Is it Worth it? Opening a Credit Card for Points: Is it Worth it?The first article in our âIs it Worth It?â series tackles the tough topic of credit card points. Are they worth it?Credit cards, when used properly, can be a valuable tool for building your financial well-being. Aside from the convenience of credit cards offer, using no more than one-third of your credit and paying off the bill in full every month is one of the most reliable ways to build your credit score. That does not mean using a credit card comes without risks. Given that credit cards lack the tangibility of cash, if you are not careful, you can put yourself into significant debt. That is why you must master responsible credit card practices if you are going to use them.Once you have mastered regular credit card use, you may want to try and earn some points so you can go for the credit card high score. In other words: opening credit cards with rewards programs in an attempt to save money overall, or just earn benefits you might not receive otherwise. But what are these high-level credit card strategies? And are they even worth it?The prosIt will take some research to determine which cards will maximize your rewards, but once you have done that, you can use those cards responsibly as part of the good habits you have already established.âIf you are in good standing and are making timely monthly payments on all outstanding cards, opening a new credit card account with rewards points that best suits your financial goals (i.e. travel, cash-back deals) may be a good option,â says Beverly Friedmann, who works for consumer review site ReviewingThis. âThere are certainly a myriad of options for credit card accounts to open that can save you up to thousands per year and/or different types of travel incentives (i.e. mileage points and free hotel stays).âOpening new cards can eventually offer a boost to your credit score â" as long as you pay them off in full each month.âYour debt utilization ratio will lowe r by increasing your overall credit limit, which will impact your credit score in a positive way,â explains Leslie H. Tayne Esq., founder and head attorney at debt relief services firm Tayne Law Group. âMake sure to not take on more debt, however, and pay off your balance in full each month to fully take advantage of this benefit of having a greater credit limit.âUsed properly, the right credit cards will not just save you money on big occasional purchases, but can actually make your regular, everyday expenses more affordable, as well. Take this personal example from Josh Hastings, founder of Money Life Wax: âMy wife and I use a groceries and eating out only credit card to earn points. It is easy to track our monthly spending on food, we have a goal of staying below $350 each month, and we use the points to eat out! We do the same thing with a gas credit card too; we just always pay it off each month!âThe consSome experts are less enthusiastic about the idea of opening new credit cards to use for rewards, including financial expert Debbi King, who says there are two cons to opening a new credit card for the perks:One, opening a new card will affect the length of credit history portion of your credit score. This factor is based on the length of time all credit accounts have been open. Opening a new card makes that time lower, which will lower your score and will lengthen the time it will take to reach the excellent time frame. Two, opening a new credit card also adds to the temptation to buy something without the cash to pay for it. When you have credit cards available, you can be tempted to charge an item and pay it off over time instead of using cash. This increases your debt. Many credit cards also come with additional straightforward costs, says Xavier Epps, founder and CEO of XNE Financial Advising.âIf you want to open new credit cards just for their points, you have to ask yourself if you do not mind taking on extra fees, such as the annual fee, â Epps says. Finally, you need to be aware that applying for new cards can lead to a temporary mark on your credit score.âOnly apply for a card if you know that you are very likely to be approved for that card,â Tayne urges. âIf your credit isnât the highest and you are working towards increasing your credit score, you could be doing more harm than good, because a hard pull will lower your credit score by a few points.âThe bottom lineNo matter what route you choose with your credit card use, the most important thing is maintaining your good credit card habits.âWith any credit card, users must make sure they make their monthly payments on time,â Epps asserts. âIf not, they risk paying additional interest, losing money on late fees, and lowering their credit score, which can affect their ability to receive loans or other credit cards. Users can minimize these risks by maintaining a credit card utilization of 20% to 30%. Be sure the purchases you make are purchases you can pay for at a later date.âIt can be easy to get caught up in the excitement of opening new cards. Just be sure to always keep a level head.

I Chose The Griefshare Support Group - 1249 Words
I chose the GriefShare support group because as nurses we will need to help our patients and their families with the grief process when a loved one passes away. On March 29, 2014, I met Claudette St. John, the group leader, at 6:45pm at Northwest Christian Church in Acworth, GA. Rick Baldwin also attended the meeting. The group meets from 7-8:30pm. Claudette shared that she has been doing grief support classes for the past 20 years and the past 3 years she has been doing GriefShare at Northwest Christian. She lost her teenage daughter in a car accident 20 years ago. She expressed that there really are not any rules, other than just respecting each individual. She tasks herself with keeping the meetings on track and has a democratic leadership style. GriefShare is a Christian based program consisting of 13 weekly session. Participants do not need to attend all 13 sessions, the sessions can also be done individually. A workbook is given to those that are participating in the program. G riefShareââ¬â¢s goal is to help those experiencing grief, work through the process and recognize the different aspects of grief that they may encounter. Prior to the start of the meeting, she introduced Rick and me to the group. The group inquired what program we were in and if either of us had experience in dealing with grief. I shared that my dad passed away suddenly 2 years ago. That year, I also lost my grandfather, grandmother and my aunt. There were 5 individuals who were attending the meeting.

Marco Polo- An Exploratory Essay - 1049 Words
Many children, including myself, have once played the game Marco Polo. Although, I have always been curious, who exactly is Marco Polo? My fascination of Marco Polo warped into a fixation of his travels. Marco Polo was born in Venice in the year 1254. His father, Nicolo, and his uncle, Maffeo, were merchants who had seats in the great nobleman council of Venice (Polo IV). According to his records, he had traveled thousands of miles with his father and uncle. Marco, Nicolo and Maffeo (known as the Polos) left Venice, and did not return for twenty-six years. Upon their return, they were not welcomed in Venice. The Polos were long thought to have been dead. When they arrived in Venice, their clothes were old and worn-out; the things thatâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦He called this city the ââ¬Å"City of Heavenâ⬠(Freedman 41); Marcos wrote, ââ¬Å"It is without a doubt the finest and most splendid city in the worldâ⬠(Freedman 41). However, Marco Poloââ¬â¢s last stop was in China, a place so different and interesting compared to his own; he spent the majority of his time there. After about a three and a half year journey, Marco noted that the Polos arrived in the court of Kublai Khan, the conqueror of China. The Great Khan ruled a vast empire of prosperous cities that had richer goods, services, and technology than any place in Europe that Marco had ever seen (Freedman 6). Kublai Khan was the grandson of the infamous Genghis Khan, the fearless Mongol who swept across Asia and the Middle East generations earlier. When the Polos arrived in Shangdu (the capitol of Kublai Khanââ¬â¢s empire), the Mongol empire stretched from China, to Russia and Iraq; the empire was at the pinnacle of its existence (Polo 26). Marco stated that he soon rose to a position of power in Kublai Khanââ¬â¢s court, because Mublai Khan was pleased by Marcoââ¬â¢s knowledge and logic. Marco endeavored on confidential missions to ââ¬Å"learn about all kinds of different mat ters in the countries he visited, in order to satisfy the curiosity of the Great Khanâ⬠(Hart 35). The Polos accumulated great wealth in jewels and gold, thanks to the generosity of Kublai Khan; however, they eventually grew homesick and began theirShow MoreRelatedStephen P. Robbins Timothy A. Calculating Correlation Values for Categorical Data Free Essays
Calculating correlation values for categorical data In order to find the correlation values for the fields in our data set, The Pearson Correlation Coefficient was used. This requires that the data in both fields be quantitative. But what if we were looking to calculate the correlation on two given fields that were say, numerical and categorical, or even both categorical. We will write a custom essay sample on Calculating Correlation Values for Categorical Data or any similar topic only for you Order Now The Point Biserial coefficient is a special case of The Pearson Correlation Coefficient; it is a branch of PCC although they are mathematically equivalent. It is used when one field has quantitative data and the other has categorical values, specifically categorical data that can only be one of two options for example gender. To calculate the PBC the data is divided between the two values of the dichotomous data, where the two values of this field are given the values 0 and 1. The distribution of the data will in general show the frequencies for each value and can be used to show how well two fields are correlated. Spearmanââ¬â¢s Rank Order Coefficient is a method of estimating correlation between data that is nominal and importantly must be ordered. It checks how well the relationship between the two fields can be described using a monotonic function Another method for calculating the correlation is the Chi squared Test, this requires data to be classified and frequencies worked out in a table. From this table the correlations can be determined using the Chi Square Test, this works on any pair of nominal or categorical fields How to cite Calculating Correlation Values for Categorical Data, Papers

Protests That Change Teh World ââ¬Å"Weapons Trainingâ⬠by Bruce Dawe, Charlie Chaplinââ¬â¢s Speech ââ¬Å"the Great Dictatorâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Where Is the Loveâ⬠by the Black Eyed Peas. Essay Good morning publishers of penguin. Today Iââ¬â¢m here to present three texts that I believe should be included into the anthology ââ¬Å"Protests that Changed the Worldâ⬠Each of these texts share similar context and are the same in purpose. The power of a speech lies in its ability to persuade an audience successfully. With this in mind the three texts which I believe have shown great ability to as persuading audiences is The poem ââ¬Å"Weapons Trainingâ⬠by Bruce Dawe, Charlie Chaplinââ¬â¢s speech from ââ¬Å"The great dictatorâ⬠and the song ââ¬Å"Where is the loveâ⬠by The Black Eyed Peas. Weapons Training is a piece of war poetry written by Burce Dawe in 1970. This poem is considered a dramatic monologue spoken by an aggressive and intimidating sergeant whoââ¬â¢s training soldiers that are about to be sent off to war. Bruce Dawe has used rhetorical questions to encourage the reader or listener to consider the message or viewpoint. The rhetorical questions ââ¬Ëwhat are you looking at? , What are you laughing at? , What are you going to do about it? ââ¬â¢ used in Weapons Training are said in an aggressive tone, clearly used to bully its audience. Saying it in an aggressive tone provokes fear through the audience manipulating them into supporting the use of weapons. Although it is an issue one might usually not choose to support, the fact that it is said in such an intimidating tone encourages the listener to support it due to the fear of what the consequences might be if they donââ¬â¢t support what the speaker is promoting. The author also uses repetition of the word ââ¬Å"deadâ⬠this is clearly directed towards the soldiers in order to emphasise the officerââ¬â¢s message. This is a form of teaching the soldiers to hate, fear and listen to authority in order for them not to die needlessly. The use of onomatopoeia in this poem like ââ¬Ëclickââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëpitter-patterââ¬â¢ has the similar effect as the rhetorical questions. It creates a sense of imagery that is almost deathly and horrifying which is also incredibly intimidating towards its audience giving them an insight into how horrific the use of weapons can actually be. It is clear that the authorââ¬â¢s goal was to convince the audience about the harsh effects of using weapons, which he has successfully achieved. The speech evoked immense support against the use of weapons and violence from the general public. Bruce Dawe has used this style of writing to effectively describe the sound of weaponry to show how the soldiers were being turned into weapons themselves. The second text that I have chosen for this anthology is Charlie Chaplinââ¬â¢s speech from the Great Dictator. This speech comes from a satire comedy of Nazi Germany and Adolf Hitler in which Charlie Chaplin has re-worded Hitlerââ¬â¢s speech and instead of saying ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠all the time he uses ââ¬Å"weâ⬠which completely changes the meaning of the speech. We all want to help one anotherâ⬠¦ We all want to live by each otherââ¬â¢s happinessâ⬠¦ We donââ¬â¢t want to hate and despise one anotherâ⬠this is a form of Inclusive language, which Charlie Chaplin has used in his speech, as itââ¬â¢s a very adequate technique with a very influential meaning, which also allows the audience to feel included. C harlie Chaplin has also used the technique of accumulation: ââ¬Å"Greed has poisoned menââ¬â¢s souls, has barricaded the world with hate; has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshedâ⬠this technique itââ¬â¢s considered to be a very powerful way to demonstrate what greed has not only done to humans but to this world. Repetition is used several times by the author of this speech in order to really get his message through to the audience. An example of repetition is ââ¬Å"You people have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happinessâ⬠This is an effective way to persuade the audience as heââ¬â¢s tone of voice is not demanding instead heââ¬â¢s just showing heââ¬â¢s point of view towards war and what itââ¬â¢s turning humans into. ââ¬Å"Where is the loveâ⬠by Black Eyed Peas is my last chosen text. This song is an anti-war anthem, in which they grieve a variety of worldwide problems and many issues are discussed. ââ¬Å"Negative images is the main criteria Infecting the young minds faster than bacteriaâ⬠is a metaphor which stands out quite a lot in this song. It refers to how negative images in the media and society affect our youth today. The negativity is what influences young minds today, and is blamed as the result for many acts of crime by young people. The Black Eyed Peas use the repetition of the phrase ââ¬Å"where is the love? to emphasise the message they are trying to deliver through this song, which is asking the audience where the love has gone. It is well known that repetition is a tool of manipulation, which is what they have tried to do through the lyrics. Lastly thereââ¬â¢s the use of rhyme. Rhyme is a technique that is used several times through out this song. An example is ââ¬Å"But if you only have love for your own race, then you only have space t o discriminate and to discriminate only generates hateâ⬠. The use of this rhyme in this song is to alert the audience about how strongly hate effects our world. It is referred to as an ongoing cycle, where if you only have respect and love for your own race, it automatically generates hate for the others. The aim of these lyrics is to highlight how the effects of hate in our world and the use of rhyme certainly accentuate the message. In my opinion these three texts are all very adequate for this future anthology ââ¬Å"Protests that change the worldâ⬠as the three texts have a great message and have all been effective when persuading itââ¬â¢s audience against the issue of war. How do we define ââ¬Ëgroupââ¬â¢? Groups are commonly found in which people or working people are together to form a whole. Groups signify the collectivity of friends in circles, families, communities and co-workers. Groups are an essential part of our community life. As they can be in a small group of two or three people or in a large number of people. Groups that are interacting and interrelating with each other. Group interaction in general can be defined as a group of people interrelate and interact together to target the tasks or resolving conflict of issues at in order to reach a good understanding in communication, building team rapport and spirit. Organizations, school or societies which organize or form a group of students , committees or co-workers to interact and work together for any meetings, events or in any kind of discussions for the purpose of reaching a better understanding by discussing together in team to target the unsettling issues or to cater to any key tasks in their organizations. In order to reach a better understanding and interaction, it is good to have the groups to interact with good and effective skills, brainstorming and share experience, seek explanation and find solutions to resolve the issues together in order to obtain good decisions . . 2 The importance of learning skills The importance of learning skills determine the effectiveness of interaction in groups for an end result of attaining solution. Learning of interaction skills are important steps that enables the ability to speak comprehensibly and convincingly and to listen the needs and analyzing response of others, by exchanging ideas and shari ng of experiences. These are the fundamental skills in carrying out the knowledge of communication theory and process in interaction. . 3 How learning these skills will benefit your audience in order to work effectively in a group By learning up effectively in groups motivate us to ask and respond to each other, elaborate and support each otherââ¬â¢s opinions, enunciate own thoughts, brainstorming and share experience to reflect own knowledge. A member of the groups in general will open up the discussion issues, suggests the members to provide their ideas and opinions, seek explanation and find solutions to resolve the issues. Discussions would conclude well if the whole process of group interaction is managed well. Active group participation will also benefit the members of the group in building team spirit. Nevertheless, the benefits of group interaction would very much depend on the well managed teams and their cooperation. Besides, learning the skills will help the group to be more productive and completed their tasks effectively. Effective skills will help the group to generate and develop a good and effective interaction. 1. 3. 1 Instill individual responsibility and accountability Effective skills will help to instill individual responsibility and accountability as groups will reach an understanding in what they need to do, what are the next steps to carry out and how would they complete within the deadline, each of them hold responsibility and accountable for their own tasks. 1. 3. 2 Positive feedback Focusing and listening well on peopleââ¬â¢s ideas and comments in one the skills in interaction which help the group members to receive and provide feedback about othersââ¬â¢ opinions, questioning of doubts. This will help to open up the members for improvement. Problem solving: Group members help the group to develop and use strategies central to their group goals. As such, they can facilitate group decision making and deal productively with conflict. In extreme cases, they know when to approach the professor for additional advice and help. Management and organization: Group members know how to plan and manage a task, how to manage their time, and how to run a meeting. For example, they ensure that meeting goals are set, that an agenda is created and followed, and that everyone has an opportunity to participate. They stay focused on the task and help others to do so too. Knowledge of roles: Group members know which roles can be filled within a group (e. g. , facilitator, idea-generator, summarizer, evaluator, mediator, encourager, recorder) and are aware of which role(s) they and others are best suited for. They are also willing to rotate roles to maximize their own and othersââ¬â¢ group learning experience. ââ¬Å"This paper presents a model of collaborative learning designed to help an intelligent collaborative learning system identify and target group interaction problem areas. The model describes potential indicators of effective collaborative learning, and for each indicator, recommends strategies for improving peer interaction. This collaborative learning model drove the design and development of two tools that automate the coding, and aid the analysis of collaborative learning conversation and activity. Empirical evaluation of these tools confirm that effective learning teams are comprised of active participants who demand explanations and justification from their peers. The distribution of conversational skills used by members of a supportive group committed to their teammates learning is compared to that of an unfocused, unsupportive group. The results suggest that structured, high-level knowledge of student conversation in context may be sufficient for automating the assessment of group interaction, furthering the possibility of an intelligent collaborative learning system that can support and enhance the group learning process. â⬠|Available: International Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Education (IJAIED) 12 (2001) 40-62 | |(http://aied. nf. ed. ac. uk/members01/archive/vol_12/soller/full. html) | |Learning Research and Development Center (LRDC), University of Pittsburgh. | |[| |p| |i| |c| |]| ââ¬Å"To function successfully in a small group, students need to be able to communicate clearly on intellectual and emotional levels. Effective communicators: * can explain their own ideas * express their feelings in an open but non-threateni ng way * listen carefully to others ask questions to clarify othersââ¬â¢ ideas and emotions * can sense how others feel based on their nonverbal communication * will initiate conversations about group climate or process if they sense tensions brewing * reflect on the activities and interactions of their group and encourage other group members to do so as well ââ¬Å"Regular open communication, in which group members share their thoughts, ideas, and feelings, is a must for successful group work. Unspoken assumptions and issues can be very destructive to productive group functioning. When students are willing to communicate openly with one another, a healthy climate will emerge and an effective process can be followed. â⬠ââ¬Å"Skills for a Healthy Group Climate To work together successfully, group members must demonstrate a sense of cohesion. Cohesion emerges as group members exhibit the following skills: * Openness: Group members are willing to get to know one another, particularly those with different interests and backgrounds. They are open to new ideas, diverse viewpoints, and the variety of individuals present within the group. They listen to others and elicit their ideas. They know how to balance the need for cohesion within a group with the need for individual expression. # Trust and self-disclosure: Group members trust one another enough to share their own ideas and feelings. A sense of mutual trust develops only to the extent that everyone is willing to self-disclose and be honest yet respectful. Trust also grows as group members demonstrate personal accountability for the tasks they have been assigned. # Support: Group members demonstrate support for one another as they accomplish their goals. They exemplify a sense of team loyalty and both cheer on the group as a whole and help members who are experiencing difficulties. They view one another not as competitors (which is common within a typically individualistic educational system) but as collaborators. # Respect: Group members communicate their opinions in a way that respects others, focusing on ââ¬Å"What can we learn? â⬠rather than ââ¬Å"Who is to blame? â⬠See Constructive Feedback in the process section for more details. â⬠Available: (Online)http://cte. uwaterloo. ca/teaching_resources/tips/teamwork_skills. html Individual responsibility and accountability: All group members agree on what needs to be done and by whom. Each student then determines what he or she needs to do and takes responsibility to complete the task(s). They can be held accountable for their tasks, and they hold others accountable for theirs. Constructive Feedback: Group members are able to give and receive feedback about group id eas. Giving constructive feedback requires focusing on ideas and behaviours, instead of individuals, being as positive as possible, and offering suggestions for improvement. Receiving feedback requires listening well, asking for clarification if the comment is unclear, and being open to change and other ideas. As an instructor, use some of these strategies to encourage students to develop an effective process within their small groups: Design the group task so that the students must work together. Group members will be more motivated and committed to working together if they are given a group mark; if you choose to evaluate in this way, be sure to make your expectations extremely clear. See the CTE Teaching Tip sheet ââ¬Å"Methods for Assessing Group Workâ⬠for additional ideas. Once students are in groups, have them develop, as one of their early assignments, a group contract in which they articulate ground rules and group goals. See Teaching Tips ââ¬Å"Making Group Contractsâ⬠for details. Be sure that groups discuss how they will respond to various scenarios such as absentee or late group members and those who do not complete their assigned tasks. Distribute a list of decision-making methods and strategies for conflict resolution. The CTE Teaching Tip sheet ââ¬Å"Group Decision Makingâ⬠is a good place to start. Have each group articulate, based on this list, a set of strategies for decision making and conflict resolution; this list should become part of the group contract. You may also want to offer yourself as an impartial arbitrator in emergency situations, but encourage students to work out problems among themselves. Provide students with guidelines for running a meeting, such as setting and following an agenda, specifying time limits, and monitoring progress on the agenda. Consult the CTE Teaching Tip sheet ââ¬Å"Meeting Strategies to Help Prepare Students for Group Workâ⬠for additional suggestions. Teach students effective methods for giving and receiving feedback. For sample methods, see Teaching Tips ââ¬Å"Receiving and Giving Effective Feedback. Create an assignment that involves them giving feedback to group members, and make it part of their final grade. To help students recognize and make the most of their own and one anotherââ¬â¢s preferred roles, outline with them a list of team roles (see Teaching Tips ââ¬Å"Group Rolesâ⬠for one such list), have them determine which role(s) suits them best, and give them time to discuss within their groups how their particular role(s) will complement those of other group members. Requiring them to rotate their roles helps them to expand their skills set. 2. 0Problems faced in group interaction

How to add cool graphics to your LinkedIn Profile!
How to add cool graphics to your LinkedIn Profile! Have you always wondered how some people got really cool graphics into their LinkedIn Profiles? Is it magic? No, itââ¬â¢s easy! All you need is your character map. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s my character map?â⬠you may ask. If you are a mac user, I refer you to this forum. If you are a Mac user, I refer you to this list of how to insert special characters. Apple provides this help page as well for inserting emojis, accented letters, and other symbols into documents. If you are a PC user, go to your start menu and start typing character map into the search box. Or, if you dont have a search box because of an odd technical situation (not that I know from experience about this.. ehhemm) you can click on All Programs, then the Accessories Folder, then System Tools, then Character Map. Heres what youll see once you enter the character map: Choose the symbol you want to insert into your profile and double click on it. The symbol will appear in the Characters to copy box: Using this feature, you can insert foreign language alphabets, bullets of many varieties, and any other symbols that strike your fancy. You will then be able to create profiles that look like these (click to see full profiles): Another trick is to insert a line across the page for emphasis. Lines take up 40 characters but I think theyââ¬â¢re worth it. The easiest way to create a line in your profile is to copy one from someone elseââ¬â¢s profile. You can also use arrow instead of bullets. Heres what it looks like: Using a combination of graphic highlights, you can make your profile ââ¬Å"popâ⬠in a way that everyone elseââ¬â¢s does not. In my opinion, itââ¬â¢s worth putting a bit of effort into any strategy that will keep people interested in reading past the first glance. Graphics can do that! Have you used graphics in your profile in creative way? You are invited to share what youââ¬â¢ve done in the comments below!

Affect on weight gain and sugar water on Mice Research Paper
Affect on weight gain and sugar water on Mice - Research Paper Example Overweight and obesity are interrelated terms for many health complications. Children and adolescents also fall under this category. Many health complications such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, breast, colon and prostate cancers and depression are associated with the obesity and overweight.. Obesity is caused due to the imbalance in the energy homeostasis. Many factors such as metabolic, environmental, cultural, socioeconomic, genetic and behavioral factors are associated with the obesity and overweight. The reason for the increase in the body weight was identified as increased carbohydrate intake mainly in the form of sugars. Carbohydrate intake increases the blood glucose and insulin levels. If simple carbohydrates are taken in the food, the production of glucose is very high and it increases the blood glucose level. Undigestable carbohydrates do not increase the blood glucose level as that of simple sugar and simple carbohydrates. This sort of hyperglycemic re sponse increases the carbohydrate oxidation and contributes to the body fat gain. (Malik, Schulze and Hu). The sudden changes in the blood glucose contribute to the variation in the postprandial glucose concentration. This finally affects the metabolism of the body and induces weight gain. Our body can store 300-500g of carbohydrates as glycogen in the human body and the rest are oxidized and converted into fat. The studies have confirmed that a 480g of oral carbohydrate load did not induce the fat oxidation in the young adults. (Saris). If the percentage of carbohydrate intake is very high then the increase in the body weight will be drastic. The increase in the body weight also leads to the risk of coronary heart disease and Type 2Diabetes mellitus. Obesity is generally caused by the difference in the energy homeostasis of food intake and daily physical activity. Obesity is the nutrition related problem in the developing and developed countries. To overcome obesity, many health gu idelines are focused such as increase in the physical activity and reducing the intake of foods containing sugar and fat. Sugar is a disaccharide molecule. Sucrose, maltose and lactose are compound sugars with the general formula C12H22O11 . (Saris). Sucrose is the common sugar used in our day to day life. Sucrose contains glucose and fructose. Sucrose is the most important dietary factor for weight gain. Readily digestible food have high glycemic index( GI) with higher post prandial blood glucose and insulin concentrations than the less digestible carbohydrates. Sugar containing foods have high glycemic index and increase the carbohydrate oxidation and contribute to body weight. (Saris). Similarly high fructose and galactose content increases the body weight. The galactose and fructose are used as sweeteners in the food and they increase the blood glucose concentration on ingestion. The sweet taste of the sugar is the main reason for the preference and intake of carbohydrate rich f ood. Diet induced obesity is caused by the conversion of carbohydrates into fat deposits in the white adipose tissue and the liver. (Lowndes et al.). The energy metabolism and carbohydrate and lipid metabolism are regulated by a complex network of signaling processes. High sucrose diet can induce the expression of the white adipose tissue and mRNA of liver Lipoprotein lipase enzyme. High sucrose diet is found to increase the risks of cancer. Pancreatic cancer is the most pre dominant cancer in this case. The diet that contains high concentration of sucrose and dextrin acts as the

Union Organization Campaigns Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3250 words
Union Organization Campaigns - Research Paper Example From the critical perspective, the overall efficacy of labor union and its ability to deliver entrusted objectives is largely determined with the effectiveness of union organizational campaigns and tactics utilized to achieve desirable goals. Unions can organize corporate campaigns ranging from various on-job actions and litigation to strike and negative publicity campaigns. The overall purpose of evaluating the effectiveness of union organizational campaign, its success or failure is to reveal combinations of tactics useful in specific labor actions that are associated with more coherent strategies for winning employer concessions. Since the late 1970s, scholars have taken notice of unions increased use of union organizational campaigns. Some view it as the means necessary to make labor more mobile and flexible, in order to keep up with how corporations have restructured themselves to compete in the global economy. Business has become ââ¬Å"leaner and meanerâ⬠incorporating changes to increase productivity and cut costs (Champlin and Knoedler, 1999). Union organizational campaigns are attempts to address these new transformations in the economic environment through focused strategies executed to bring management into bargaining and counter unfriendly labor actions through targeting a company's points of vulnerability in order to decrease its profits (Heckscher, 1988). Others authors see the incorporation of new tactics as facilitating the overall expansion of union membership, resulting in a revitalized workerââ¬â¢s social movement. 's social movement. They estimate this will increase the status of unions through increasing the power of unions as a whole. This perspective supports restructuring in order to change values and objectives within unions so that they can gain external benefits, such as increasing membership (Moody, 1998). Reorganization would include forging multi-union connections to coordinate bargaining "across industrial lines to attack the centers of capital" (Moody 1998, p.341). Extended solidarity and mobilization could increase the legitimacy of picket lines, strengthen the ability unions to use their combined leverage to prompt equitable contract negotiations, and may garner widespread public support for workers. There is no consensus on how to define union organizational campaigns. There is also no conclusive classification of what actions and expected outcomes delineate the success or failure of a campaign. Kim Moody's book (1998), An Injury to All: The Decline of American Unionism, credited Ray Rogers as the first to coin the term "corporate

Multiple Regression :: Gender
Introduction For this study researchers were interested in assessing whether self-reported health behaviours and health literacy are able to predict self-rated physical health, after controlling for the effects of gender and age. They are further interested in knowing which of the variables provide a statistically significant contribution to the equation. Also of interest to the researches was the interaction between gender and health literacy, that is, the degree to which individuals are able to obtain, process and understand the information needed to make appropriate decisions about their health, and the impact of this interaction on health. Data was collected from 350 people randomly selected from a dataset from a population-based study of health and health determinants. Health was measured on a scale of 1 to 10, where higher scores represent better health. Health behaviours include healthy diet, physical activity and relaxation and are measured on a scale from 1 to 15. Health literacy is measured on a scale from 10 to 45. Gender and age in years were also collected from the respondents. Data Screening & Assumption Testing The initial step in this data analysis involved screening the data for possible missing values, out of range values, univariate and multivariate outliers and multicollinearity. Three variables used for this study contained missing values; both system and identified missing. These variables were health literacy, physical activity and age in years, one case for each of these variables. Each of these missing values were recoded with a missing value code of 999. Descriptive statistics produced for each of the variables used for the analysis revealed out of range values for the variables healthy diet, physical activity and relaxation. These values were also recoded to the missing value code 999. Testing for the presence of outliers was done by generating a scatterplot matrix for all variables (Figure 1), and plots of Cookââ¬â¢s distances (Figure 2) and Mahalanobis distances (Figure 3). There are no cases which indicate a particular cause for concern. On the Mahalanobis distance chart there are no cases that is substantially larger than the rest and on the Cookââ¬â¢s distance there is no case with a distance above 1 which would indicate an influential point. Multicollinearity was tested and there were no variables with a tolerance of less than 0.3. It is also necessary to check the regression assumptions to ensure that any results from analysis are valid. The first assumption is that all variables are measured on a metric scale or that categorical variables are dichotomously coded. This is true for the data in this study. The second assumption is that each observation in the sample is independent of the other observations, the

Toys for Tots
Toys For Tots Take a seat, and think back to the very first Christmas morning you recall. How much it meant to receive that special toy youââ¬â¢ve been waiting for all year. Every child deserves to have that same tingly feeling of joy and excitement, but not every kid gets to. The Toys for Tots Foundation is an organization that aims to fix that, but they cannot do it alone. They can always use all the support they can. It is run by the United States Marine Core and they work to be the change.I support this noble mission by contributing toys to my communityââ¬â¢s campaign. In the fall of 1947, with a hand crafted Raggedy Ann doll, the wife of Marine Reserve Major Bill Hendricks made this doll and asked her husband if he would ââ¬Å"deliver it to an organization that would put it in the hands of a needy child on Christmas Dayâ⬠. ( ) Unfortunately, Mr. Hendricks could find no such agency to provide this service. To fill that void, Major Hendricksââ¬â¢ wife told him he sh ould start one and indeed he did. That same year, Major Bill Hendricks, USCR, and a group of Marine Reservists collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. The scheme was so successful that it was expanded into a nationwide campaign after the Marine Corps adopted Toys For Tots in 1948. They have conducted successful campaigns nationwide each year since then. The hallmark that remains the initial objective of the program today is to ââ¬Å"bring the joy of Christmas to Americaââ¬â¢s needy children. This renowned charity foundation is nationwide and their goal is to send ââ¬Å"a message of hope to less fortunate children that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens. â⬠( ) All their main donations are toddler oriented unwrapped toys. They accept a wide variety of items, and they receive many donations every year. They are open year round but have strict constraints on their deadlines for all contributions. This is to ensure ample time to round up all the donations across the nation and distribute them. The deadline is always early December to make sure all the less fortunate kids get a toy to unwrap for Christmas. Their mission is to ââ¬Å"play an active role in the development of one of our nationââ¬â¢s most valuable resources ââ¬â our children; to reunite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign and to contribute to better communities in the future. â⬠(www. ToysForTots. rg) With multiple funding and aiding organizations, Toys for Tots is able to get its job done every single year. Organizations like the Department of Health and Human Services aid the foundation in raising awareness (Toys). With allies such as these; the foundation has a far reach to accomplish its goal of good will. Fundraising groups like SaveWealth aid the foundation by raising money so the foundation has more resources to accomplish its tasks. With more resources, more kids have a smile on their face for the holidays.Itââ¬â¢s not only big companies that are involved though; the little guy makes a huge difference as well. I contribute to this noble organization by simply donating as many toys as I possibly can to my communities local Toys For Tots campaign. There are many other ways to support them as well though. You could also donate your time to assist your local campaign. If youââ¬â¢re a company/business owner, allow the Marines to place a toy collection box there. All other donations made to Toys For Toys are tax deductible and you can send them via mail, on-line, or CFC.Although you may not be able to show your support by donating time, space, or financially; demonstrating how to be a model citizen and have integrity, honesty, a positive attitude will give children a role model to look up to. Be a passive mentor . Youââ¬â¢ll be helping the children and your community. Everyone has a choice of one of two paths to the future. You can either leave the responsibility up to someone else in hopes that they do it, or you can pitch in to support an organization thatââ¬â¢s out to provide the proper steering and improve the development for Americas needy children.I challenge you to be a participator, not a spectator. Toys For Tots is Americas premier Community Action program. The Marines are definitely the unchallenged leaders in looking after all the needy children at Christmas for over half a century now, although, they could not have done it alone. Everyoneââ¬â¢s support is needed and appreciated. Toys For Tots not only helps children, but also has a positive impact on communities. Most people want to make a difference. So help them ââ¬Å"be the change. ââ¬

Maxis Communication Berhad Merger With Airasia Finance Essay - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 5 Words: 1536 Downloads: 6 Date added: 2017/06/26 Category Finance Essay Type Narrative essay Did you like this example? The meaning of merger which is combination of two or more firms, in which the objectives are enhanced and increase shareholders wealth, increase company profit and allow the company move into a rapidly growing market place. Maxis Communication Berhad (MCB) leading the mobile provider and has mostly subscribers in Malaysia, The company provides mobile, fixed line telephony, data and network services and also a largest IPO ever in Malaysia and South East Asia. Although MCB having a strong financial background, but its competitor which are Celcom Berhad and Digi Telecommunication also considered as a very strong background and advantages competitor, how to prevent exceed by those company? Our suggestion for the MCB is merger with the Airsia (Malaysia low-cost airlines). Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Maxis Communication Berhad Merger With Airasia Finance Essay" essay for you Create order Airasia operates scheduled domestic and international flights and is Asias largest low-fare, no-frills airline. These mergers are considering as conglomerate merger which means combination of company in unrelated business. We choose Airasia as a target, because Airasia has keep growing around the Asia and it been chooses become a Worlds Best Low-Cost Airline for 2009. According our research, Airasia are also finding more subsidiary and partnership to expand their business, which does will be an opportunity for MCB as well and the key benefit of that merger is ability reduce risk by MCB. Unfortunately, Airasia are still under a huge debt, but that become the main motive why we suggestion that MCB merger with it, because of tax consideration are a key motive for merging. Under that situation, will increase profit and increase shareholders wealth of MCB as well. Beside that, because of Airasia have a strong management team, which teams can keep minimize net loss of capital and maximi ze profit at a same time, operation their borrowing asset well and keep growing under the situation of debt. Strength From our suggestion, if MCB successfully merger with Airasia, it definitely bring much advantages than the disadvantages such as because of Airasia brands name, it will easily make advertising for the MCB. Regarding the MCB perspective, they are keeping advertising about their product which is broadband, 3G network, Iphone package, postpaid, prepaid and so on. Because of those advertising for the product, according for the MCB annual report mentioned that under the sales and marketing parts, it cost around 4.6% from their of revenue driven by year-end promotions, although it does not costly than other, but if MCB merger with airasia, they can saves those expenses for expands business or doing investment on the future. Because of Airasia brands name are well establishment in Asia pacific and advantages, strong brand name recognition of global market by organization, and Airasia are highly frequency linked with country such as Brunei, Cambonia, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, India, Ira n, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Australia and so on, it will bring the benefit and increase reputation, brand name recognition of MCB. It easily makes advertising through their aircraft. At a same time, it will increase MCBs recognition by other organization with under a very rapidly growing market situation than other strongest competitor. Furthermore, successfully merger between the both companies, MCB will continuously become the strong leading mobile phone service provider in Malaysia, and Airasia will become a leading airline industry in Asia. Those will have a strongly financial background, will attract more investor to do investment and attract more people using Maxis network. In addition, MCB will have good potential increase managerial skill and technology from Airasia, because of their stronger management team. From Airasia perspective, company merger will enhance their fund-raising ability, company may be unable to obtain funds for its own internal expansion beca use of highly debt background but to obtain funds for external from (MCB) combination, and because of MCB has high liquid asset and low level of liabilities, it considered benefit for Airasia as well, it immediately decreasing financial leverage and allow funds to be raised externally at lower cost and reduce their debt in the future. These reasons mentioned that Airasia must accept suggestion merger by MCB. Weakness Although if merger with Airasia will bring along of advantages and benefit, but also does to consideration about the disadvantages for the merger. MCB can control significantly larger amount of assets than could acquire through merger, but major disadvantages of MCB which will increase risk resulting of the leverage effect, and must be pay attention that Airasia are having the bigger amount of debt on the future in 12 years repayment period, MCB may help Airasia covers its debt on that moments which means MCB immediately having debt at a same time. In addition, if MCB successfully merger with Airasia, it will become difficult to analyze by the MCB, and investor of MCB have difficulty understanding because of these complexity. In addition, effect of a merger on the earning per share of the MCB initial decrease in the per-share earnings of stock is expected. MCB will sell at low earning per share, its shareholders value may suffer of that merger at a short-term period. So, we define this merger as a long-term investment by MCB. From financial perspective, higher risks are higher return, thats why we suggest that MCB merger with Airasia, although these have few disadvantages. Opportunities According the annual report by the Airasia, we know that Airasia are still under the huge amount of debt. The tax loss can be applied against a limited amount of future income of the MCB, that is a consideration by the purpose of merger, if successfully merger with Airasia, it will bring a lot of benefit and after-tax earning by reducing the taxable income of the MCB. Although Airasia having a huge debt, but they have a strong management team which are control their debt as well. As the information, we know that borrowings of AirAsia are all in USD, it will benefit from the depreciation of USD because of this recent years economics crisis, USD are getting depreciation day by day, Airasia may having the foreign exchange gain from the repayment of debt. However, the foreign exchange gains just an accounting gain, which wont generate any real cash flow or economic value. Furthermore, fast expansion of AirAsia, leveraging on financing facilities, is one of the factors that enable AirAs ia to maintain its profitability in the highly competitive airlines industry. Regarding the economics of the world this few years, only the lowest cost player through effectively cost reduction, economic scale, and growing market place will survive. Those reasons are become the main purpose why MCB needs merger with them and we feel that Airasia are getting growing with rapidly, and way of expansion which are through borrowings instead of issuing new shares is the best way to benefit the shareholders as well. From MCB perspectives, maybe can follow their way and management to increase asset by borrowing from others although include the interest, but MCB will have more cash flow in hand, it can be use for expand business by highly return area or diversification investment. Beside that, Although the earnings per share of Airasia is quite low, RM 20.6, compare to the MCB earnings per share, RM 27.25, it allow investors believe that this merger will increase the wealth of the shareholde rs due to the high value of both companies in the market now on the future. Those reasons are becomes the way to keep growing and expands the businesses of MCB. Threat From Airasia perspectives, increasing competition because of increasing number of low cost airline competitors, and aggressive competition against the large or traditional airline companies under airlines industry such as Malaysian Airlines (MAS). Those threats will directly affect Airasia performances, profit, advantages, and indirectly affect to the holding company which is MCB as well. These are the problem that MCB must consideration after merger with Airasia. In addition, monitoring the foreign currency and adjust the profit against non-operating income are the important, because of exchange currency may cause company having the debt or gain. After MCB merger with Airasia, if MCB unable to pay Airasias liabilities, will cause both of them faced the challenge and seriously problem to become merger failure. Conclusion As a conclusion, we strongly suggest that MCB merger with Airasia. Because of those benefit are highly exceed the disadvantages of the merger. If successfully merger, MCB will have advantages of competitive between Celcom and Digi and other telecommunication network. As our information, because recent months, Celcom and Digi are plans to explore long-term network and infrastructure collaboration in Malaysia which are sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). They plan to corporation; it will threaten to MCB position in Malaysia. Thats why MCB must prepare himself and merging the target which are Airasia. Mainly reason that merger is about the tax loss carryforward for the MCB. The tax loss can be applied against a limited amount of future income of the MCB over 12years (Airasia debt period) or until the total tax loss has been fully recovered. MCB using those tax loss carryforward to expand its business at a same time. Beside that, increasing managerial skill or technology, and a dvertising through airline, those reason become the situation why MCB needs merger with Airasia. Furthermore, increasing profit on the long-term perspectives as well and because of its more pros than cons.

Ancient Mayan Astronomy the Sun, Moon, and Planets
The ancient Maya were avid astronomers, recording and interpreting every aspect of the sky. They believed that the will and actions of the gods could be read in the stars, moon, and planets, so they dedicated time to doing so, and many of their most important buildings were built with astronomy in mind. The sun, moon, and planetsââ¬âVenus, in particularââ¬âwere studied by the Maya. The heyday of Maya astronomy was in the 8th century CE, and Maya daykeepers published astronomical tables tracking the movements of celestial bodies on the walls of a special structure at Xultun, Guatemala in the early 9th century. The tables are also found in the Dresden Codex, a bark-paper book written about the 15th century CE. Although the Maya calendar was largely based on the ancient Mesoamerican calendar created at least as early as 1500 BCE, Maya calendars were corrected and maintained by specialist astronomical observers. Archaeologist Prudence Rice has argued that the Maya even structured their governments based in part on the requirements of tracking astronomy. The Maya and the Sky The Maya believed that the Earth was the center of all things, fixed and immovable. The stars, moons, sun, and planets were gods; their movements were interpreted as gods traveling between the Earth, the underworld, and other celestial destinations. These gods were greatly involved in human affairs, and so their movements were watched closely. Many events in Maya life were planned to coincide with certain celestial moments. For example, a war might be delayed until the gods were in place, or a ruler might ascend to the throne of a Mayan city-state only when a certain planet was visible in the night sky. Sun God Kinich Ahau The sun was of utmost importance to the ancient Maya. The Mayan sun god was Kinich Ahau. He was one of the more powerful gods of the Mayan pantheon, considered an aspect of Itzamna, one of the Mayan creator gods. Kinich Ahau would shine in the sky all day before transforming himself into a jaguar at night to pass through Xibalba, the Mayan underworld. In a story in the Quiche Maya council book called the Popol Vuh, the hero twins Hunaphu and Xbalanque transform themselves into the sun and the moon. Some Mayan dynasties claimed to be descended from the sun. The Maya were expert at predicting solar phenomena such as eclipses, solstices, and equinoxes, as well as determining when the sun reached its apex. The Moon in Maya Mythology The moon was nearly as important as the sun to the ancient Maya. Mayan astronomers analyzed and predicted the moonââ¬â¢s movements with great accuracy. As with the sun and planets, Mayan dynasties often claimed to be descended from the moon. Mayan mythology generally associated the moon with a maiden, an old woman, and/or a rabbit. The primary Maya moon goddess was Ix Chel, a powerful goddess who battled with the sun and made him descend into the underworld every night. Although she was a fearsome goddess, she was also the patroness of childbirth and fertility. Ix Chââ¬â¢up was another moon goddess described in some of the codices; she was young and beautiful and may have been Ix Chel in her youth or in another form. A lunar observatory on the island of Cozumel appears to mark the occurrence of the lunar standstill, the varying movement of the moon through the skies. Venus and the Planets The Maya were aware of the planets in the solar systemââ¬âVenus, Mars, Saturn, and Jupiterââ¬âand tracked their movements. The most important planet by far to the Maya was Venus, which they associated with war. Battles and wars would be arranged to coincide with the movements of Venus, and captured warriors and leaders would likewise be sacrificed according to the position of Venus in the night sky. The Maya painstakingly recorded the movements of Venus and determined that its year, relative to Earth, not the sun, was 584 days long, closely approximating the 583.92 days that modern science has determined. The Maya and the Stars Like the planets, the stars move across the heavens, but unlike the planets, they stay in position relative to one another. To the Maya, the stars were less important to their mythos than the sun, moon, Venus and other planets. However, the stars shift seasonally and were used by Mayan astronomers to predict when the seasons would come and go, which was critical for agricultural planning. For example, the rise of the Pleiades in the night sky occurs at about the same time that the rains come to the Mayan regions of Central America and southern Mexico. The stars, therefore, were of more practical use than many other aspects of Mayan astronomy. Architecture and Astronomy Many important Mayanà buildings, such as temples, pyramids, palaces, observatories, and ball courts, were laid out in accordance with astronomy. Temples and pyramids, in particular, were designed in such a way that the sun, moon, stars, and planets would be visible from the top or through certain windows at important times of the year. One example is the observatory at Xochicalco, which, although not considered an exclusively Mayan city, certainly had Mayan influence. The observatory is an underground chamber with a hole in the ceiling. The sun shines through this hole for most of the summer but is directly overhead on May 15 and July 29. On these days the sun would directly illuminate an illustration of the sun on the floor, and these days were held importance for Mayan priests. Other possible observatories have been identified at the archaeological sites of Edzna and Chichen Itza. Mayan Astronomy and the Calendar The Mayan calendar was linked to astronomy. The Maya basically used two calendars: the Calendar Round and the Long Count. The Mayan Long Count calendar was divided into different units of time that used the Haab, or solar year (365 days), as a base. The Calendar Round consisted of two separate calendars; the first was the 365-day solar year, the second was the 260-day Tzolkin cycle. These cycles align every 52 years. Internalizing My Personal Interactions with Others Essay
Early Childhood Early childhood is a significant time of physical, cognitive, social and emotional development in my life. Seeking emotional regulation is crucial in this period. I remember an instance in my life when I was still in preschool. Our teacher asked us to stand up because we are going to pray before we eat our snack, but I did not stand up so the teacher called my attention. I just stood up and bowed my head till the prayer was finished. I was so ashamed that I cannot even look at the surroundings and my classmates in the classroom. Since I was really shy at that time, I was not able to finish my preschool class. With this attitude, I realized that I have an internalizing problem. Internalizing problems occur when a child hasâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This is the time where I experience tremendous growth and changes in my body as this imply the onset of puberty. Likewise, this stage is important to me as it helps me to be a responsible and mature individual at a young age. One partic ular event in my life that I will never forget was when my mother got sick of kidney disease. During this period, I felt I needed to grow up early for my family especially for my younger siblings. My mother was confined in the hospital for weeks, and I was the one left to attend the needs of my brother and sister. I knew I had to be strong for them. At a young age, I learned how to cook, help in their assignments and take care of them. It was tough since I was also studying at that time. I had to adapt to the situation and be in charge of them. This incident caused me to value my family for more than anything else. In a way, familism influenced my life. Familism is the belief that family members should care for one another even if it means sacrificing oneââ¬â¢s own freedom and success (Berger, Depression, pg. 377). Going through a challenging time in my adolescent year made me tougher and selfless for my family. After studying about familism in the adolescence stage, I can say that familism improves the relationship that I have with my family; however, I was not able to enjoy my adolescent days as compared to the others as my age. Familism allows me to have a deeper perspective on how toShow MoreRelatedFactors That Influence Attachment Between Foster Children And Their Caregivers1161 Words à |à 5 Pageschild, gender of the child, time in placement, sensitivity, and attachment security. I guess we would both agree that it is rational for us to increase our fees from ?100 to ?1,000 per 1,000 words. I mean a 2,000 word undergraduate essay would only cost ?2,000. Thatââ¬â¢s a steal, especially considering ALL the additional benefits youââ¬â¢d get. Andrew Davis Essay Example For Students
Andrew Davis Essay Andrew DavisAs an accomplished Hollywood director, Andrew Davis words are important for anyone hoping to become a player in the game, AKA Hollywood. Andrew Davis has directed many successful action films for Hollywood. The way that he found his success and has maintained it is the most important thing that I learned from Andrew Davis. He has given me an example of how one person found success in Hollywood amongst a flood of others seeking the same high ground. The Fugitive is by far the most successful film Andrew Davis has directed. Some critics have even gone as far to state that The Fugitive is the best action thriller of the decade. Some of his other more recent films include A Perfect Murder, Steal Little, Steal Big and Chain Reaction. Andrew Davis is also known for making intense action films such as Under Siege, Code of Silence and Above the Law. His comments on why and how he came into making such films and being labeled as an action film director provide an interesting insight into the way that Hollywood works. He stated that since he found some initial success with action films he was repeatedly called upon by Hollywood to just do what he did last time.He mentioned that he had ambitions to break away from being pegged as an action film director, but that it was a difficult thing to do when you were trying to keep your hand in the game. These comments illustrate one of the ways that Hollywood works. Perhaps the most important thing Andrew Davis talked about was the power of networking in Hollywood. Often talked about in class, Andrew Davis is a prime example of the breaks that one can get through friends and contacts. His relationship with Thomas Haskell provided him with a valuable contact in Hollywood. Andrew Daviss relationship with Academy Award winner Thomas Haskell points to the importance of making and keeping in contact with as many people as possible in the industry. Andrew Davis recommended to the class that if at all possible, one should try and find a mentor for guidance and assistance in the early days of delving into Hollywood. As a filmmaker, Andrew Davis utilizes a more spontaneous approach to directing, as opposed to more structured directors such as Stanley Kubrick. Andrew Davis described making a film as, a cross between war and a circus. His approach to filmmaking in comparison with other guest this quarter and last fall illustrates the vast differences in styles of directors. Finally, Andrew Davis reconfirmed the comments of just about every other guest that almost every film is comes to production via different routes. Some films are handed to directors to be made and others are made when screenplays find their ways to directors who in turn takes takes the screenplays to studios for financial backing. Andrew Davis is a very interesting person and creator of cinema. The story of his journey to Hollywood and succeeding is an inspirational one. Many of his films have become very successful commercially. He has given me a valuable insight into succeeding in Hollywood.

Chivalry Essays - Chivalry, Virtue, Warrior Code, Excited And Scared
Chivalry Chivalry When I first think of chivalry, I think of knights and dragons and damsels in distress. It's not really something that I associate with the society that we live in today. You've heard it before, chivalry is dead. But I don't really believe that. It's too final, it doesn't leave any room for us to be better people again. Chivalry isn't dead, it's napping. And I think it's time for us to wake it up. To me, chivalry isn't just about brave knights coming to rescue helpless princesses. It's having the courage to always do what you know is right, regardless of what happens or what other people think. And it isn't only about the big things in life, it's also about the little choices we make everyday. Countless times during the course of a day, people are faced with situations where they are forced to choose between doing the right thing and the wrong thing. More often than not, there is a middle choice, it's not quite wrong, but it isn't exactly right either. Chances are, this middle choice will be easier and more tempting. Chivalry is doing the right thing just because you know it's right. Chivalry is holding the door open for old people and people with babies. It's loaning your favorite skirt to your best friend for that big party even though you know she's going to spill something on it. Chivalry is being the best person that you can be at all times. It's totally idealistic and as such unreachable. We will never be perfect, but we can always be better today than we were yesterday. I was at this website the other day and (I forgot to write down the address, and I'm not entirely sure if this is accurate, but it works so let's just go with it) I was reading about the virtues that were considered chivalrous by knights and kings and what have you back in the day. It said that they figured the five key virtues of chivalry were honor, loyalty, courage, generosity, and forgiveness, and I think that these are still things that every person should strive to be. Honor is doing what you say you will and treating other people fairly and with kindness, no matter how they have treated you. It means that when you do something wrong, you come right out and say so, you accept responsibility for it even if you know someone is going to be really mad about it. People who are honorable admit when they've made a mistake and then do everything they can to fix it. They ask to be forgiven, but they don't expect it and they accept whatever happens. Loyalty, to me, is the biggest thing. It's the quality I value most in other people and in myself. To me, being loyal to someone means that you will stick with someone through anything. Even if you think they're wrong, you recognize that it's their decision and you stay with them anyway. Knowing that you have someone you can count on is absolutely the most encouraging thing in any difficult situation. Which brings me to courage. Courage isn't not being afraid of anything; people who aren't afraid of anything are stupid. Courage is seeing what needs to be done and doing it even though it scares you. Real bravery is facing the things that scare you. I think that generosity is underrated. I don't necessarily mean giving people things, it's more than that. Generosity is going out of your way to do something for someone else just because you can, not because you have to. It's what you do for other people without getting anything in return, just to make things easier for them. Besides, doing something that makes someone else feel good will almost always make you feel good too. Forgiveness is something that I find surprisingly difficult to explain. To me, it's believing that no one ever really sets out with hurting someone else as their goal. It's automatically assuming that when someone does something to you, there wasn't any malice behind it and then being able to let it go because even if they haven't said so,

Patterns Design Essays - Software Design Pattern, Free Essays
Patterns Design Essays - Software Design Pattern, Free Essays Patterns Design Periodically, someone asks for examples of successful (or non-successful) uses of 'fill-in-the-blank' software engineering technology. In truth, this is a difficult, if not impossible, request to fulfill. Why? There are several reasons: - Small examples, which are easily understood, can be (and often are) handily dismissed as toy (as opposed to real) applications. - It is difficult to justify the cost of a large (significant) test case (e.g., [Aron, 1969] and [Baker and Mills, 1973]). When fill-in-the-blank software engineering technology is used on a real project, accurate and detailed records are seldom kept. Thus, the results are often anecdotal. Even if accurate and detailed records are kept, it may be difficult to make any meaningful comparisons, since there may be few, if any, statistics for other similar projects which did not use fill-in-the-blank technology. - The results of a large-scale use of fill-in-the-blank technology are seldom, if ever, all positive, or all negative. This allows different interpretations for the same information. [One of the major problems is that success (i.e., what must be specifically shown to declare the technology viable) is seldom defined before the project begins.] The all-too-regrettable, and all-too-frequent, language/technology jihads (holy wars) often result from different interpretations of the same information. - The example is for a particular application domain, e.g., real-time embedded systems. Those with differing domains (e.g., MIS) can assert that the example is irrelevant for their domains. - In the case of a technology which may be implemented using a number of different programming languages, the number of problems increases dramatically, e.g.: - Some will observe that the example uses a programming language which they do not, cannot, or will not use. Thus making the example worthless as far as they are concerned. Bibliography none
